WBB's James Named NECC ROW


ATTLEBORO, Mass. – Mitchell College freshman Sheanna James was named New England Collegiate Conference Rookie of the Week for the sport of women's basketball, as announced by the conference on Monday afternoon.

James led Mitchell to wins over Bay Path College and Becker College in the final week of the regular season to secure a berth in the 2012 NECC Championship. The rookie guard paced the team in scoring at 20.5 points per game and also averaged 6.5 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 5.5 steals. She scored a game-high 25 points on 12-for-20 shooting and added seven rebounds, eight assists and four steals in an 84-72 win over Bay Path on February 14. She then finished with 16 points, four assists and seven steals in a 63-57 victory against Becker on February 18.

James has played in 24 games and made 23 starts this season and leads the team in scoring at 16.4 points per contest. In conference play she leads the NECC in steals (3.8 spg) and ranks second in scoring (17.5 ppg) and 10th in assists (3.3 apg).

James is the second Mitchell women's player to garner rookie of the week status this season. Classmate Zilka Navarro also earned the distinction on January 16.

Mitchell (8-16 overall, 7-11 NECC) is the sixth seed in the NECC Championship and will play at third-seeded Newbury College in the quarterfinals on Tuesday, February 21 at 7 p.m.
