WBB Clipped at Johnson & Wales

Providence, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University women's basketball squad returned from the holiday break with a 66-56 victory against Mitchell College in a non-conference contest at the Wildcat Center on Saturday evening.

Johnson & Wales was led by Savannah Kresge and Valerie Arce with 17 points apiece. Kaitlin Kenney notched 11 points, four rebounds and three steals while D'Anna Rolle rounded out the double-figure scorers with 10 points and six steals in the win for the Wildcats.

Freshman Caycee Williams paced Mitchell with 15 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.  Sophomore Amanda Garcia tallied 11 points and eight boards while freshman Jessica Shepherd was also in double figures with 10 points in the loss for the Mariners.

Mitchell controlled the action early and took its first double-digit advantage when a lay-up by Williams made the score 14-4 just five minutes into the contest. The Mariners led 23-13 with 5:41 left in the first half, but Johnson & Wales closed out the half with a 15-2 run and took just its second lead of the game, 27-25, on a lay-up by Kenney with 29 seconds remaining.  The Wildcats took the 28-25 lead heading into the locker room at halftime.

Johnson & Wales continued its impressive run to start the second half and took its first double-figure lead after a pair of free throws by Kenney gave the Wildcats the 44-33 lead with 12:33 left in the contest. Mitchell chipped away at the lead and made it a 56-52 game after a lay-up by Williams with 2:52 remaining. It wouldn't be enough, however, as the Wildcats hit six free throws in the final minute to seal the 66-56 victory.

With the victory JWU improved to 2-8 while Mitchell fell to 2-7. The Mariners will next host Daniel Webster College on Tuesday, January 7 at 3 p.m.
