WBB Tops Daniel Webster


NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's basketball team picked up a 63-50 victory over Daniel Webster College on Tuesday afternoon in a New England Collegiate Conference showdown at the Yarnall Athletic Center.

Freshman Caycee Williams netted a team-high 15 points and added career bests of 15 rebounds and five blocks to pace the Mariners. Senior Kate Mulloy added 12 points while sophomore Savannah Boyle chipped in with 10.

Daniel Webster's Ashley Giampetruzzi led all scorers with 19 points and notched a double-double with 12 rebounds. Ariel Guzman and Ashley England also scored in double figures with 13 and 12 points, respectively.

Mitchell, which never trailed in the contest, took control late in the first half to lead 28-16 at the break. Giampetruzzi scored seven points in the half to keep the Eagles in the mix, but she missed the final 6:24 after picking up her second foul and heading to the bench. The Mariners took advantage, closing the half on a 10-4 run that included five points from Williams.

Giampetruzzi scored 12 points in the second half as Daniel Webster whittled the deficit down to as little as five with 9:06 to play. However, the Mariners responded with a 10-2 run to pump the lead back to double digits and coasted to the finish.

Mitchell shot 36 percent as a squad and held a 60-52 advantage on the glass. Sophomore Amanda Garcia grabbed 13 rebounds and added five points off the bench, and Boyle and Mulloy each hauled in seven boards. Williams' double-double was her team-leading fourth of the season.

The Eagles shot just 22 percent from the floor and went 6-for-26 from long range. Natalie Nagle finished with nine rebounds and four steals.

Mitchell (3-7 overall, 3-1 NECC) will next play at Becker College on Thursday, January 9 at 6 p.m. Daniel Webster (4-6 overall, 2-2 NECC) returns to action at Wheelock College on Thursday at 8 p.m.
