WBB Closes Out Regular Season with Win at Becker


LEICESTER, Mass. – Becker College fell to Mitchell College by a final score of 61-48 in New England Collegiate Conference women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Leicester Gym.

The win evened Mitchell's record at 12-12 (12-6 NECC) while Becker's season came to an end with a record of 2-23 (2-16 NECC). The Mariners have qualified for the 2015 NECC Championship and have earned the right to host a first round game on February 24.

Jessica Shepherd paced the Mariners with a game-high 21 points. Amanda Garcia added 10 points and a career-high 21 rebounds to earn a double-double. Savannah Boyle chipped in with 14 points while Dazjavia Williams contributed nine points and eight boards. 

Brooke Martel led Becker with 18 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Gabrielle Gallo fell a rebound shy of a double-double after finishing with 13 points and nine boards off the bench. Alycia Dery chipped in with five points and five assists. 

Mitchell never trailed in the contest after some hot shooting early. The Mariners scored 22 of the game's first 24 points and benefitted from five three-point field goals during the stretch, three of which came from Shepherd and the other two from Boyle. Becker missed 10 straight field goal attempts and turned the ball over eight times during the span.

Mitchell led 32-17 at halftime but saw its lead trimmed to 44-39 following a three-pointer by Martel with 7:07 remaining. After the margin later shrunk to four, the Mariners sealed the win with a 9-0 run that was capped by a three-pointer and jumper from Shepherd to cement the victory.
