Second-Half Surge Leads WBB Past Daniel Webster


NASHUA, N.H. - The Mitchell College women's basketball team used a 16-0 run in the second half to overtake Daniel Webster College on Thursday night, picking up a 74-60 victory in New England Collegiate Conference action.

Diamond Thomas came off the bench to net a game-high 22 points to pace the Mariners, who won their third straight game and improved to 10-8 overall and 9-4 in league play. Chelsea Newman chipped in with 15 points and eight rebounds while Toshina Jessamy added a season-high 14 points.

The Eagles (7-13, 5-8 NECC) scored the first five points of the contest and didn't trail until the big run by the Mariners, which came late in the third quarter. Daniel Webster led 45-35 with 3:52 remaining in the stanza before Thomas and Jessamy took the game over. The two combined for the final 13 points of the period as Mitchell seized the lead and never looked back.

Thomas and Jessamy continued to have their way in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, combining for Mitchell's first 11 points. Jessamy completed the 16-0 run with her second three-pointer of the half, and the Eagles went nearly seven minutes without a field goal as the Mariners extended the lead. Later in the fourth, a three-pointer by Savannah Boyle gave Mitchell its largest lead at 62-49 with 6:04 to go.

All told, Thomas and Jessamy outscored the Eagles 24-4 during the critical stretch, turning a 10-point deficit into a 10-point lead. Jessamy netted all 14 of her points during the span and shot 5-for-6 from the floor on the night.

Mitchell will next host Southern Vermont College on Saturday, February 6 at 1 p.m.
