Newman Earns NEWBA Recognition


KEENE, N.H. – Mitchell College senior Chelsea Newman earned weekly honors from the New England Women's Basketball Association on Monday.

Newman was named to the NEWBA Honor Roll, which highlights the best performances from the region for the week. She becomes the first Mitchell player to ever earn the distinction.

Newman averaged 15.0 points, 9.0 rebounds and 4.3 steals per game last week to lead the Mariners to a 3-0 record in New England Collegiate Conference play. She netted a season-high 17 points to go with nine rebounds and four steals in a road win at Bay Path University. She then finished with 15 points and eight boards at Daniel Webster College before wrapping up the week with a double-double (13 points, 10 rebounds, seven steals) against Southern Vermont College.

Newman has played in 13 games and made four starts this season. She is averaging 9.9 points and a team-high 8.4 rebounds per contest. She also leads the team in blocks (12) and ranks third in steals (23) despite joining the team at the semester break.

Mitchell (11-8 overall, 10-4 NECC) will next play at Wheelock College on Wednesday, February 10 at 7:30 p.m.
