WBB Comes Up Short at Saint Joseph


WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The Mitchell College women's basketball team fell to the University of Saint Joseph by a final score of 72-57 on Saturday afternoon in the consolation game of the USJ Blue Jays Tip-Off Tourney.

Jessica Shepherd scored 16 points to lead the Mariners and earned a spot on the all-tournament team. Francesca Pinard came off the bench to record a double-double -- the first of her career -- of 13 points and 12 rebounds. 

Rajeen Mayo led all scorers with 22 points to pace Saint Joseph (2-1 overall).

The Blue Jays led 15-12 after the first quarter but took control of the game in the second half. Saint Joseph opened the stanza with 10 unanswered points en route to a 39-21 lead at intermission.

For the second night in a row, the Mariners outscored their opponents in the second half but could not make up the deficit. Pinard scored all 13 of her points in the final 20 minutes of action. 

Mitchell made a season-high eight three-pointers in the contest, half of which came from Shepherd. The West Hartford native shot 4-for-9 from beyond the arc while her teammates combined to go 4-for-20.

Mitchell (0-3 overall) will next host Regis College on Tuesday, November 29 at 5:30 p.m.
