WBB Opens 2017 with Loss to Conn College

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Connecticut College opened the new year with an 89-40 victory over Mitchell College on Tuesday evening in non-conference women's basketball action at the Yarnall Athletic Center.

The Camels (9-2 overall) held a 25-4 lead after the opening period and never looked back. Conn shot 46 percent for the game and outscored Mitchell 33-7 at the free throw line. The Mariners shot just 25 percent for the contest.

Conn's Caroline Pangallo came off the bench to lead all scorers with 18 points and shot 4-for-6 from three-point range. Mairead Hynes contributed 15 points and didn't miss a shot on the night, finishing 5-for-5 from the field while connecting on five attempts at the charity stripe. Liz Malman rounded out the scorers in double digits with 10 points, eight of which came from the line.

Jessica Shepherd paced the Mariners (2-8 overall) with eight points and also grabbed five rebounds. Kate McCormack finished with six points, four board and three assists.  

The Camels scored on the opening possession of the game and never trailed. Conn produced quality shots with crisp passing on the offensive end to slowly build the lead, pushing its advantage to double figures on a three by Pangallo with 4:52 to go in the first quarter. 

Mitchell struggled to find its offense in the opening period, connecting on only two field goals early before muddling through a 7:49 scoreless drought. Conn capitalized by pushing the advantage to 21 following a pair of free throws by Pangallo in the closing seconds of the stanza.

A free throw by Tiana Edwards and a jumper by Ashleigh Beauford snapped Mitchell out of its funk in the opening minute of the second quarter. The Mariners ended up scoring 17 points in the period but trailed 45-21 at the break.

Pangallo scored eight points in the second half as the Camels continued to pile up the points. Conn had 12 players contribute in the scoring column and finished with a 52-32 advantage on the glass, led by a game-high 12 rebounds from Meg Corcoran.

Mitchell will next host Southern Vermont College on Saturday, January 7 at 1 p.m. Conn returns to action at home against Hamilton College on Friday, January 6 at 7 p.m.
