Women's Basketball Falls at Albertus Magnus in Season Debut

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- The Mitchell College women's basketball team suffered a 71-41 setback in its season opener against Albertus Magnus College on Wednesday night at the AMC Athletic Center.

The Falcons (1-0 overall) had three players score in double figures led by 15 points from Jill Johnson. Olivia Bolden and Kiki Epps finished with 14 and 12 points, respectively, as Albertus Magnus shot 36 percent from the field and forced Mitchell turnovers. Bolden and Johnson combined for 26 rebounds and each recorded a double-double as the Falcons held a 55-41 advantage on the glass.

Mitchell shot just 28 percent for the game and went 0-for-10 from beyond the arc. Jordan Lohneiss paced the visitors (0-1 overall) with eight points in 21 minutes off the bench. She wasn't the only reserve to make a contribution as Kate McCormack pitched in with six points, five rebounds and four assists while Ariana Carter added six points and seven boards.

The Mariners scored the first point of the game but fell behind after Albertus Magnus answered with a 10-2 run. The Falcons led 23-11 after the first quarter of play and went into the locker room at intermission with a 34-21 margin. Any hope for a Mitchell comeback was quelled by a 2-for-14 shooting effort in the third quarter, and Albertus Magnus stretched the lead to as many as 33 before the final buzzer.

Mitchell will next play at the Brandeis Tip-Off Tournament on November 17-18 in Waltham, MA. The Mariners will face the host Judges on Friday at 5 p.m.
