WBB Can't Keep Up with WCSU

WALTHAM, Mass. -- The Western Connecticut State University women's basketball team downed Mitchell College, 128-77, Saturday afternoon in the consolation game of the Brandeis Invitational at Auerbach Arena.

Jancy Sherwood led six Colonials in double figures with a game-high 22 points. Western Connecticut State (1-1 overall) shot 35 percent from the floor, incuding a 19-for-68 effort from long distance, and forced 55 turnovers. Mitchell (0-3 overall) shot 47 percent but couldn't make up for the miscues. Ariana Carter came off the bench to score a career-high 18 points for the Mariners, who also got solid offensive outings from Allegra Jones (14 points, four steals) and Francesca Pinard (10 points, 10 rebounds). Jones earned a spot on the all-tournament team.

The game was close in the opening minutes, with WCSU holding a slim 13-11 lead with 5:21 to go in the stanza. However, the Colonials closed the quarter with a 24-9 spurt to take control. Western Connecticut State then outscored Mitchell 23-16 in the second quarter to lead 60-36 at the break. 

The Colonials continued their offensive assault in the second half, putting up 34 points in each of the final two periods. They cracked the century mark early in the fourth and coasted to their first victory of the season.

Mitchell will next host the University of Saint Joseph on Wednesday, November 29 at 6 p.m.
