WBB Comes Up Short at Newbury

BROOKLINE, Mass. -- The Mitchell College women's basketball team dropped a 58-51 final to Newbury College on Saturday afternoon in New England Collegiate Conference action at Pappas Gymnasium.

Savannah Olsen guided Newbury (4-4, 2-1 NECC) with a 15-point, 10-rebound effort. Haley Garcia led Mitchell (1-7, 1-1 NECC) with a season-high 24 points.

The Mariners jumped out to an early 6-0 lead that included four early free throws by Garcia before Olsen put the Nighthawks on the board. The two teams traded baskets throughout the opening 10 minutes that saw four lead changes and two tied scores. Mitchell led 15-14 after the first period.

The Nighthawks woke up offensively, outscoring the guests 19-9 in the second to carry a 35-24 lead into halftime. Garcia led all first-half scorers with 14 points on 6-of-13 shooting. Jaymesha Sanders led the Nighthawks with seven first-half points on 3-of-6 shooting while Olsen went 2-of-6 from the field for four first-half points.

Mitchell opened up the third on an 11-2 run, cutting the Nighthawks' lead to just two at 37-35. Olsen finished a lay-up at the 2:34 mark to extend the Newbury lead back to four before a Sanders lay-up gave the Nighthawks a 42-37 lead after 30 minutes.

Garcia rallied the visitors back again in the fourth, eventually tying the game at 42-42 after a three-pointer and an and-one lay-up on back-to-back possessions to start the stanza. After the teams traded a few baskets, the score was again tied with 2:27 to go after Mitchell's Allegra Jones drilled a three from the corner. Jones finished with 11 points on 4-of-12 shooting. However, the Nighthawks made six free throws down the stretch to take home the win.

Mitchell will wrap up the fall semster at Wentworth on Tuesday, Decembe 12 at 7 p.m.
