WBB Stumbles at Elms

CHICOPEE, Mass. -- The Mitchell College women's basketball team dropped a 71-45 decision at Elms College on Thursday night in New England Collegiate Conference play at Picknelly Arena.

Mackenzie LaRochelle led all scorers with 20 points as the Elms snapped a five-game losing streak and improved to 2-8 overall. She went 3-for-3 from three-point range and was 5-for-6 at the free throw line, finishing the game with six rebounds and two steals. Molly Moulton and Niah Pantry each added 11 points while Regina LeBlanc finished with nine rebounds.

Mitchell (4-9, 3-2 NECC) was led by Dejia Santana, who finished with a season-high 13 points off the bench. She shot 5-for-9 from the floor and also added a team-high seven rebounds. Camille Staggers also added nine points in a reserve role.

Elms held Mitchell to just 26-percent shooting (15-for-57) for the game and held a 53-50 rebounding advantage. Trailing 11-10 after the first quarter, the Blazers took control of the game in the second, outscoring the visitors 21-4 in the stanza to build a 31-15 lead at halftime.

Elms committed just 13 turnovers in the game--its second-lowest total of the season--while forcing Mitchell into 25. 

Mitchell will next play at Southern Vermont College on Saturday, January 13 at 1 p.m.
