WBB Falls in Season Opener at Trinity

HARTFORD, Conn. -- The Mitchell College women's basketball team opened the 2018-19 season with an 80-50 setback to Trinity College on Friday night in the opening round of the Trinity Tip-Off Tournament.

Newcomers Amina Wiley and Kelsey Hernandez paced the Mariners with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Hernandez, a junior transfer, also nabbed a game-high 10 rebounds to post a double-double in her Mitchell debut.

The Mariners held the lead three times in the opening quarter but trailed 18-14 heading into the second stanza. However, Trinity opened the second period with a 12-0 run and kept Mitchell off the scoreboard until the final four minutes of the half. Mitchell trailed 35-17 at the break and couldn't make up the difference in the second half.

Ariana Carter and Jessica Lohneiss each came off the bench with strong contributions for the Mariners. Carter finished with eight points on 3-for-5 shooting and also pulled down three rebounds in 13 minutes. Lohneiss chipped in seven points that included a three-point field goal.

Mitchell will play either Roger Williams University or Eastern Connecticut State University in the tournament's consolation game on Saturday afternoon.
