WBB Comes Up Short vs. Roger Williams

HARTFORD, Conn. -- The Mitchell College women's basketball team dropped an 84-72 decision to Roger Williams University on Saturday afternoon in the consolation game of the Trinity Tip-Off Tournament inside of Oosting Gymnasium.

Roger Williams jumped out to an early lead before a late push by Mitchell made things interesting. The Hawks took a 26-12 lead at the end of the first quarter before opening up a 17-point lead with 7:21 left in the second. The Mariners clawed their way back though to cut the deficit to 42-32 at the half.

Mitchell continued to fight back, ending the third quarter on a 10-run to make it a one-possession game entering the final quarter. A layup by Dejia Santana tied things at 53-53, but a quick 10-2 run by the Hawks re-opened a double-digit lead. Jessica Lohneiss scored five straight points for Mitchell to cut the deficit to 68-64 with just under six minutes left, but Roger Williams had another run left in the tank as it ultimately pulled away for the victory.

Mitchell was paced by Amina Wiley, who finished with 23 points and 16 rebounds and landed a spot on the all-tournament team. Santana turned in 13 points and eight boards off the bench for the Mariners, and Le'Sandra Turner (11) and Kelsey Hernandez (10) also scored in double digits. Sam Mancinelli and Gabby Jerahian each finished with 23 points for Roger Williams, and Karli Opalka turned in a double-double performance with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Mitchell (0-2 overall) will play its home opener against Dean College on Tuesday, November 20 at 6 p.m.
