WBB Sprints Past Lesley

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Mitchell College never trailed in an 88-41 victory over Lesley University on Thursday night in New England Collegiate Conference women's basketball action at the Yarnall Athletic Center.

Amina Wiley posted game highs of 25 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Mariners, who improved to 14-8 overall and 13-2 in league play. Marissa Sweeney also added a double-double in the contest, tying a career-high with 17 points while grabbing 11 boards. Le'Sandra Turner finished with 12 points and added a game-high seven assists.

Lesley (1-20 overall, 1-14 NECC) was paced by 16 points and nine rebounds from Dakota Jones. Theresa Pereira also scored in double digits with 10 points.

Turner got the Mariners off to a quick start with a bucket off the opening tip. On the next Mitchell trip down the floor, it was Sweeney who drained a three to make it a 5-0.

Mitchell built the lead to double digits by the three-minute mark of the quarter, then closed the stanza with five straight points to lead 23-8 heading into the second. The scoring continued in the second period as the Mariners closed out the half with a 10-0 run that featured baskets by five different players. A put back by Wiley in the final seconds capped the stretch and gave the Mariners a 44-19 edge heading into the break.

The margin expanded to as many as 49 in the second half as the Mariners continued to push the pace. Mitchell finished with a 26-0 scoring advantage in transition and outscored Lesley 50-8 in the paint.

Mitchell will next host Southern Vermont College on Saturday, February 9 at 1 p.m. Lesley returns to action at home against Eastern Nazarene College on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
