WBB Rolls to Fifth Straight Win

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's basketball team extended its winning streak to five games with a 74-34 final over Southern Vermont College on Saturday afternoon in a New England Collegiate Conference clash at the Yarnall Athletic Center.

Amina Wiley finished with game highs of 20 points and 14 rebounds to pace the Mariners, who improved to 15-8 overall (14-2 NECC). Jessica Lohneiss netted a career-high 18 points—all from three-point range—while Francesca Pinard added 17 points. Julia Ryan paced Southern Vermont (6-17 overall, 4-12 NECC) with seven points.

Mitchell's defense forced 31 turnovers and held SVC to 10 points or fewer in every period. The Mountaineers shot 27 percent for the game while the Mariners finished at 49 percent.

After Mitchell grabbed the early lead, Southern Vermont fought back to pull in front thanks to back-to-back threes by Ryan and Taylor Mallett. A minute later, Lohneiss responded with her first triple of the game to put the Mariners on top for good.

Leading 14-10 entering the second period, Mitchell opened things up behind an 11-0 run that included a pair of buckets by Wiley and a three-point play from Pinard. Lohneiss later added a pair of triples in the final three minutes of the half, and the Mariners took a 35-20 lead into the locker room at the break.

Lohneiss continued with the hot hand in the third quarter, knocking down her next two attempts from deep as the Mariners extended the lead to 30. All told she made her first six attempts from beyond the arc and finished 6-for-8 for the game.

The Mariners have been flying high over the past five games, averaging 84.6 points per game while shooting 49 percent as a team. More impressively, Mitchell has outscored its opponents by an average of 42.4 points per game over the stretch.

Mitchell will next play at Eastern Nazarene College on Tuesday, February 12 at 7 p.m. Southern Vermont returns to action at home against Becker College on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
