WBB Sails Past Saint Joseph

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's basketball team cruised to a 70-46 victory over the University of Saint Joseph on Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action at the Yarnall Athletic Center.

The Mariners took control in the second quarter, outscoring the Blue Jays 28-15 to lead 39-23 at the break. Mitchell continued to pour it on in the third quarter, building the lead to as many as 31 before the final buzzer. 

Kelsey Hernandez led all scorers with 18 points to pace three Mitchell starters in double figures. Amina Wiley contributed a double-double of 16 points and 13 rebounds while Le'Sandra Turner (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) added 11 points, five rebounds and three steals. Alexis Perrone led Saint Joseph with 11 points off the bench.

Mitchell led just 11-8 after the first period but used a 9-0 run to open the second quarter. The Mariners also finished the half strong, netting 12 of the final 15 points in the stanza to lead by 16 at the break. Wiley led all players with nine points at intermission.

The Mariners broke the game open in the third quarter and took their biggest lead at 63-32 on a jumper by Turner with 7:21 to go in the fourth. Mitchell finished with a 16-2 edge in fast-break points and outscored Saint Joseph 26-8 in points off turnovers. 

Mitchell (2-3 overall) will next play at Lasell College on Sunday, December 1 at 2 p.m. Saint Joseph (4-3 overall) returns to action at Becker College on Monday, December 2 at 7 p.m.
