WBB Comes Up Short at WestConn

DANBURY, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's basketball team fell by a 70-63 final to Western Connecticut State University on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference showdown at Feldman Arena.

WestConn's Gabrielle Hurlbert and Hannah Maghini tallied 11 points apiece while Jasmine Caldwell added eight and a team-high nine rebounds. With the win, the Colonials improved to 3-6 overall, while the Mariners sank to 4-5.

Three players netted double figures for Mitchell. Amina Wiley notched game highs of 21 points and 16 rebounds while Kelsey Hernandez and Sam McKenna contributed 15 and 10 points, respectively.

WestConn dominated the offensive glass in the opening half en route to a 35-27 halftime advantage. The hosts stretched the margin to as many as 13 when Katelyn Fanning buried a three-pointer midway through the third quarter. However, the visitors muscled their way to the free throw line and cut the deficit to 51-48 heading into the final quarter.

After the first three quarters were slow and controlled, the fourth was played at a frenetic pace. A baseline jumper from Hernandez trimmed the WestConn lead to just one point with 9:17 left to play. The Colonials retaliated with an 11-2 run capped by a layup from Jessica Davis for a 62-52 lead with 6:24 remaining.

The Mariners closed the gap to 66-63. However, stellar free throw shooting in the waning minutes from WestConn's Lola Herman–who finished with nine points and five rebounds–helped cement the 70-63 win for the Colonials.

Mitchell will next play at Albertus Magnus College on Tuesday, December 17 at 5 p.m.
