Wiley, McKenna Nab NECC Weekly Nods

MANSFIELD, Mass. – A pair of Mitchell College women's basketball players were honored by the New England Collegiate Conference on Monday morning. 

Sophomore Amina Wiley was named NECC Player of the Week while freshman Sam McKenna was tabbed NECC Rookie of the Week. The duo helped the Mariners to a 2-0 week in conference play that included wins over Becker College and Elms College.

Wiley earned the distinction for the second straight week and the third time this season (Jan. 6, Dec. 9). McKenna garnered the honor for the second time this season (Dec. 16). 

Wiley averaged team highs of 20.0 points and 14.0 rebounds while shooting 63 percent from the floor last week. She shot 8-for-9 at Becker and finished with a double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds to go with two steals and a block. She followed that up with another big game against Elms, tallying game highs of 21 points and 17 boards.

Through 13 games Wiley leads the NECC in both scoring (18.4 ppg) and rebounding (14.9 rpg). Her 10 double-doubles also rank as the second-most in the country, just one behind the national leader.

McKenna averaged 17.0 points, 2.5 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 1.0 assists per game while shooting 48 percent last week. She hit five-three pointers en route to a game-high 21 points in a home win over Elms. Earlier in the week she netted 13 points at Becker.

McKenna, who has started and played in 11 games, ranks second on the team in scoring at 11.1 points per contest. She also leads the team and ranks fourth in the NECC with 21 three-point field goals.  

Mitchell (6-7 overall, 2-1 NECC) will next play at Dean College on Tuesday, January 14 at 6 p.m.
