WBB Races Past Elms

CHICOPEE, Mass. -- Mitchell College never trailed in a 72-56 victory at Elms College on Saturday afternoon in New England Collegiate Conference women's basketball action at Picknelly Arena. 

Kelsey Hernandez led all scorers with 17 points as the Mariners secured a regular season sweep over Elms and improved to 9-8 overall (5-2 NECC). Amina Wiley added 15 points and six rebounds while Le'Sandra Turner chipped in 14 points and Inanna Rice came off the bench to supply 12.

McKenzie Huria paced Elms (5-13 overall, 2-6 NECC) with 16 points while Regina LeBlanc and Angelica Peguero-Flores each provided 10.

Mitchell got off to a 6-0 start thanks to a jumper by Hernandez, a layup by Leilani McClellan and a putback by Wiley in the opening 1:37. The Mariners later closed the quarter strong, scoring seven of the final nine points of the stanza to lead 18-10 after one. 

Wiley and Hernandez each supplied eight points in the second quarter as the Mariners doubled up the Blazers in the period. Both players had 13 points at intermission as the Mariners enjoyed a 38-20 advantage.

Mitchell extended the margin to as many as 24 points in the second half coasted to the finish. Turner scored 10 of her points after the break.

Mitchell, which has won five of its last six games, will next host Bay Path University on Tuesday, January 28 at 6:30 p.m.
