NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's basketball team dropped an 83-63 final to Coast Guard Academy on Tuesday night at the Yarnall Athletic Center.

Coast Guard's Kira Wood dropped in 15 points in the opening quarter en route to a game-high 27 points. She shot 7-for-13 from deep and also grabbed seven rebounds to go with two assists and a pair of steals.

The Bears had plenty of other contributors. Jacqueline Ward recorded a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds and added five assists. Kyra Hartman finished with 11 points and four steals while Faith Butler came off the bench to chip in 10 points.

Amina Wiley and Le'Sandra Turner paced Mitchell with 13 points apiece. The former also pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds while the latter finished with nine boards, four assists and three steals. Sam McKenna added 12 points to round out the Mariners in double digits.

The Bears took control early as Wood set the tone. She shot 6-for-8 in the opening stanza and drilled three treys. Coast Guard shot 60 percent as a squad and held a commanding 32-13 lead after the first 10 minutes.

While the rest of the contest was fairly even, the Bears never let the lead dip below double digits. After trailing by as many as 22, Mitchell trimmed the deficit to 48-34 at the break.

The Mariners opened the second half with a three-point play by McKenna to pull within 11, but that would be as close as they would get. Ward netted 10 of her 17 points in the second half as Coast Guard improved to 3-0.

Mitchell (0-3 overall) will next host the University of Saint Joseph on Thursday, March 11 at 6 p.m. Coast Guard returns to action at Albertus Magnus College on Saturday, March 13 at noon.
