WBB Rolls Over CCNY

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's basketball team picked up their first victory of the season on Monday evening in their home opener, rolling over the City College of New York 68-44 at the Yarnall Athletic Center in a non-conference showdown.

The Mariners led wire to wire, stroming out of the gates by scoring 18 straight points to begin the game. Senior Jermia Dumas (Stratford, Conn.) led all scorers with a game-high 23 points on 10-17 shooting. Dumas added six rebounds and four steals for Mitchell, who successfully bounced back after a season opening loss at Trinity on Friday.

Junior guard Yasmine Santos (Pawtucket, R.I.) joined Dumas in double-figures, posting a 13 point, 10 rebound double-double, while senior Amina Wiley (New Rochelle, N.Y.) added nine points, 11 rebounds, three steals, two blocks, and two assists.

Monae Laing paced the Beavers with 13 points and eight rebounds. Anna Vikatos added 12 points of her own for the visiting team, who shot 36.7% (18-49) from the field.

The Mariners shot just 36.5% from the field, but logged a higher percentage from the free throw line (64.3% compared to 40%), outrebounded CCNY 43-35, and committed half the amount of turnovers as their opponent. The Beavers turned the ball over 28 times, which led to 24 points from Mitchell, whose lead grew as large as 25 points down the stretch.

The Mariners dominated the first quarter, leading 19-2, but the Beavers regrouped, tying Mitchell 13-13 in the second frame to carry some momentum into halftime despite trailing. The momentum was short-lived, however, as the Mariners outscoring CCNY by eight points in the third quarter to fully take control and cruise to victory.

The Mariners (1-1) return to the court on Wednesday, November 16th, traveling to face Dean College at 6:00 pm. The Beavers (0-2) will host Pratt Institute on Thursday, November 17, at 5:30 pm.
