WBB Dominates SUNY Delhi on Tournament's Second Day

DANBURY, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's basketball team followed up their 48-point victory on Friday by defeating SUNY Delhi 101-30 on Saturday afternoon on the second day of the Hat City Tournament hosted by Western Connecticut State University. It was the second straight victory for the Mariners, the first time they reached 100 points this season, and improved their record to 5-7 overall.

Senior Sam McKenna came one-point shy of her season-high, scoring a team-best 22 on 7-14 shooting to go along with three rebounds and three steals. Jamya Beddoe (New London, Conn.) poured in 18 points, including four three pointers for the Mariners, while Dede Stevenson (Hartford, Conn.) added 11 and Jermia Dumas (Stratford, Conn.) contributed 10 points, five rebounds, and six steals.

11 different players scored for Mitchell, who led from the jump and carried a 27-point advantage into the second quarter and a 48-point lead into halftime. The Mariners did not allow the Broncos to score more than nine points in any quarter, as Angelica Lazo was the lone SUNY player to reach double-figures scoring, finishing with 12 points. The Mitchell defense held the Broncos to just 22.4% shooting from the floor and forced 38 turnovers. The Mariners were able to turn those 38 turnovers into 52 points, and saw their lead grow to as large as 72 points.

As has become custom recently, Mitchell controlled play in the paint, outrebounding SUNY 59-38 while scoring 40 points in the paint.

The Mariners (5-7) will play next on Wednesday, January 4th, when they travel to Mount Holyoke for a 4:00 pm non-conference game.
