WBB Downs Mount Holyoke for Third Straight Victory

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – Sam McKenna (Millbrook, N.Y.) poured in a game-high 17 points on Wednesday evening, leading the Mitchell College women's basketball team to their third consecutive victory, 84-50 over Mount Holyoke College in a non-conference game at Howard Gymnasium.

McKenna, who made at least four three-pointers for the third straight game, was one of four Mariners who scored in double figures, as the Mitchell women have now outscored their opponents 277-124 on their three-game winning streak. Junior Yasmine Santos (Pawtucket, R.I.) contributed her third double-double of the season, scoring 15 points and grabbing 12 rebounds, while senior Dede Stevenson (Hartford, Conn.) filled the stat sheet to the tune of 12 points, five rebounds, four assists, and six steals. Freshman Jamya Beddoe (New London, Conn.) reached double-digit scoring for the third time in as many games, adding 10 points including a pair of basket from beyond the arc.

It was a slow start for both teams, as Mount Holyoke broke a scoreless tie nearly three minutes into the game on a layup by Taryn White. Mitchell made their first basket of the contest 25 seconds later, a layup by Yasmine Santos, and the Mariners would not trail again, building a seven-point lead after the first quarter and an 18-point advantage at halftime.

The Mariners held the Lyons to just 30.2% shooting from the field, outrebounded Mount Holyoke 47-41, dished out six more assists than the home squad, and forced 42 turnovers. Mitchell turned those 42 turnovers into 43 points, while also scoring 22 second chance points and 36 points in the paint.

The Mariners lead grew as large as 43 midway through the fourth quarter, with 12 players finding their way into the scoring column in the game and the bench coming through with 27 points.

Marley Berano, Kendall Maurer, and Libby Harris each finished with 11 points for Mount Holyoke, while Alex Twomey added 10.

The Mariners (6-7) will look to make it four wins in a row when they travel across town for a non-conference showdown with the United States Coast Guard Academy on Monday, January 9th at 7:00 pm. The Lyons (1-13) take the court next on Wednesday, January 13th, at home against Bard.
