McKenna Earns NEWBA Player of the Week Honors

NEW LONDON, Conn. – On the heels of being named New England Collegiate Conference Player of the Week for the second time this season, Mitchell College senior Sam McKenna (Millbrook, N.Y.) also picked up regional accolades on Tuesday night.

McKenna, who led the Mitchell women's basketball team to a 2-0 record last week, was named the New England Women's Basketball Association Player of the Week. Each week during the regular season, the organization honors a player and rookie of the week from the region and selects a five-player honor roll.

McKenna produced the most prolific offensive week in her colliegate career, averaging 32.5 points and 4.5 assists per game. The senior shot 49% from the floor, 41.2% from three point range, and 75% from the free throw line. She also averaged 3.5 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game in wins over Anna Maria College and New England College. McKenna began the week by pouring in a career-high 36 points, including eight three pointers, as the Mariners rolled over the AMCATS 89-68. She followed this up in the team's return to conference play, finishing with 29 points and seven assists in an 84-56 rout of New England College.

Winners in 10 of their last 12 games, the Mariners (13-9 overall, 4-0 NECC) will return to conference play when they visit Lesley University on Saturday, February 11th, at 1:30 pm.
