Women’s Basketball Can’t Slow Down Polar Bears

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's basketball team suffered their third consecutive on Thursday night at home, falling 80-42 to Bowdoin College in non-conference action at the Yarnall Athletic Center. The Polar Bears notched their fourth straight victory and improved their record to 7-1 with the win, while the Mariners dropped to 2-5.

Bowdoin led wire to wire, carrying a nine-point advantage into the second quarter and a 38-22 edge into halftime. The Polar Bears then outscored the Mariners 23-9 in the third frame to build upon their lead, and their hot shooting propelled them to the decisive victory. On the night, Bowdoin shot 50% from the floor, and 39.3% from three-point territory, while the Mariners were just 28% from the floor, 19% from downtown.

Senior forward Yasmine Santos (Pawtucket, R.I) recorded her sixth double-double in seven games to begin the season, finishing with 14 points and 14 rebounds, shooting 4-7 from the floor and 6-8 from the free-throw line. Sophomore guard Jamya Beddoe (New London, Conn.) added 12 points, including a trio of shots from long range, while senior Alexia Watson (Stamford, Conn.) chipped in seven points off the bench in her season debut.

Callie Godfrey paced Bowdoin with 18 points, eight rebounds, and two blocks. Sydney Jones also finished in double-figures scoring, tallying 13 points, six rebounds, and six assists, while Carley Davey collected 11 points, four rebounds, three assists, and two steals.

The Polar Bears were able to use their size as an advantage throughout the contest, outrebounding Mitchell 36-24 and outscoring the Mariners 38-12 in the paint.

The Mariners (2-5, 0-1 GNAC) will return to action when they travel for a non-contest showdown against St. Joseph's University (L.I.) on Friday, December 15th. Bowdoin (7-1, 0-0 NESCAC) will look to make it five in a row when they host Worcester Polytechnic Institute on Saturday, December 9th.
