Pride Move Past Women’s Basketball

WESTON, Mass. – The Mitchell College women's basketball team fell to Regis College by a final score of 76-58 on Saturday afternoon in a GNAC game played at Higgins Court.

Senior Yasmine Santos (Pawtucket, R.I.) poured in a career-high 39 points and registered her 11th double-double in 12 games this season, finishing with 13 rebounds and three steals. Fellow senior Alexia Watson (Stamford, Conn.) added seven points and 10 rebounds, while freshman guard Inonda Peterson (Houston, TX) chipped in seven points and four boards.

The Mariners jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first quarter behind baskets from Peterson, Santos, and Watson, but the Pride battled back and eventually took an 8-6 lead when Madi Zancan made a layup with 5:21 left in the frame. Regis would carry their lead for the remainder of the contest, building an eight-point edge after the first quarter while carrying a 37-23 advantage into the intermission.

Regis was able to maintain their edge down the stretch despite Santos netting 24 of her 39 points after halftime. The Mariners were outrebounded 48-43 and turned the ball over 31 times, to just 12 for the Pride.

Zancan paced Regis with 25 points and seven rebounds, and was one of four Pride players to score in double figures. Courtney Doherty added 17 points, eight rebounds, and three assists, while Jordyn Striggles chipped in 12 points and seven rebounds, and Haley Lightbody had 10 points, five rebounds, four steals, and three assists.

The Mariners (2-10, 0-4 GNAC) will try to get back on track when they host Elms College in a GNAC game on Tuesday, January 16th, with tipoff scheduled for 5:00 pm. The Pride (5-10, 3-1, GNAC) will go for their third straight GNAC win on Tuesday, January 16th, when they play host to Norwich University.
