Women’s Basketball Defeated at Emmanuel

BOSTON, Mass. – The Mitchell College women's basketball suffered a 73-43 defeat at the hands of Emmanuel College on Saturday afternoon in GNAC action at the Jean Yawkey Center. With the loss the Mariners drop to 0-6 in conference play, while the Saints move to 5-1 against GNAC opponents.

Senior Yasmine Santos (Pawtucket, R.I.) paced the Mariners with a game-high 23 points. Santos added seven rebounds and two assists, while fellow senior Alexia Watson (Stamford, Conn.) added 10 points, five rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Senior Lyliana Daly (Ellington, N.J.) grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds for Mitchell and freshman Jamya Beddoe (New London, Conn.) chipped in seven points and eight rebounds in the loss.

The Saints opened the game with a layup by Desiree Robinson and never looked back, leading from wire to wire. Emmanuel outscored the Mariners 21-9 in the first quarter and despite the Mariners losing the second stanza by just two points, the Saints held a 40-26 advantage at halftime. Any hope of a Mitchell comeback was extinguished with a dominate third quarter by the Emmanuel, in which they outscored the Mariners 19-6 behind seven points from Megan Schuermann.

Schuermann scored a team-high 11 points off the bench for the Saints, and was one of 12 players to finish with at least two points. Desiree Robinson recorded 10 points, five rebounds, three assists, and three steals, while Emma Tenters had nine points, and Kiera Eubanks, Paris Atuahene, and Kalia Saunders chipped in eight points apiece.

The Mariners struggled on the offensive end against the Emmanuel defense, shooting just 21.4% from the floor and 15.4% from three-point range. The Saints, meanwhile, shot 45.5% overall, outrebounded Mitchell 48-37, and forced 28 turnovers.

The Mariners (2-12, 0-6 GNAC) return home for the next game when they host the University of Saint Joseph in the first game of a conference doubleheader on Wednesday, January 24th, at 5:00 pm. The Saints (8-8, 5-1 GNAC) also jump back into action on Wednesday, January 24th, taking on Regis College.
