Mitchell Women's Basketball Falls at St. Joseph's of Maine

STANDISH, Maine Yasmine Santos (Pawtucket, R.I.) led the Mariners with 22 points, but St. Joseph's of Maine won its seventh straight with a 72-54 win over the Mitchell College women's basketball team in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) game. 

St. Joseph's improves to 16-7 overall and remains unbeaten in conference play at 12-0 while Mitchell drops to 4-16 overall and 2-10 in the GNAC.

Santos added eight rebounds for Mitchell while Lyliana Daly (Englewood, N.J.) had a game-high nine rebounds.

Alexia Watson (Stamford, Conn.) and Jamya Beddoe (New London, Conn.) were also in double figures for the Mariners as each finished with 11 points.

Angelica Hurley had a game-high 23 points and six assists to lead the Monks.

The Mariners shot 32.7 percent (18 of 55) from the floor while making three of 16 from behind the arc while the Monks were 28 of 65 (43.1 percent) from the field and connected on nine of 24 from 3-point range in the win.

The Monks jumped out to a 6-0 lead before the Mariners used a 7-1 run to tie the game 7-7 with 5:50 left in the first quarter. St. Joseph's used a 10-4 spurt to close out the first quarter for a 21-15 lead.

St. Joseph's scored seven of the first eight points of the second quarter to take a 28-16 lead just 1:27 into the quarter. The Mariners countered with a 7-2 run cutting the deficit to 30-23 with 3:47 left in the half.

Mitchell was held without a field goal over the final 3:47 getting outscored 15-4 and trailed 45-27 at halftime. Santos had 16 first half points to lead the Mariners.

The Monks would use a 12-2 run to start the second taking a 57-29 lead with 5:10 left in the third quarter to put the game away.

Mitchell is back in action on Tuesday at Rivier in a GNAC game at 7:00 while St. Joseph will play at Norwich on Tuesday at 5:00.
