Santos Named GNAC Player of the Week for Third Time this Season

WINTHROP, Mass. - Mitchell College senior Yasmine Santos (Pawtucket, R.I.) has earned Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Player of the Week honors for the sport of women's basketball, as announced by the conference on Monday afternoon. It marks the third time that Santos has been named the conference Player of the Week, having previously earning the honor the weeks of 11/27 and 1/15.

Santos emphatically concluded her senior season, averaging 38.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game while leading the Mariners to a 2-0 record on the week, including conference victories over Rivier University and Norwich University. Santos shot 50% from the floor and 75.6% from the free-throw line, netting the 1,000th point of her career in the fourth quarter of Mitchell's GNAC game against the Cadets at home.

The senior forward began the week with a double-double against Rivier, finishing with 37 points (12-24 shooting), 13 rebounds, two assists, and one steal. She then turned in a career-best performance on senior day at home on Saturday by pouring in a career-high 40 points (11-22 shooting), including the 1,000th of her career, while adding eight rebounds, two assists, and one steal. Santos was also efficient from the free throw line, making 31 of 41 attempts on the week.

With the Mariners failing to qualify for the GNAC women's basketball tournament, Santos concludes her season averaging 25.6 points per game, good for second in the conference, while leading the conference with 12.5 rebounds per contest. Her performance only improved during conference play, as she averaged 28.6 points and 12.1 rebounds across 14 GNAC games. The 25.6 points per game is also good for fourth best in the nation at the Division III level, while her 12.5 rebounds per contest is 10th most in nation at the Division III level.

Along with becoming just the fifth Mitchell women's basketball player to reach 1,000 career points, Santos finishes the 2023-24 campaign with the most points per game and rebounds per game during a single season in the Division III era of the Mitchell women's basketball program.

The Mariners compiled a 6-16 record under first-year head coach Ashley Wilson, but won four of their final six games en route to a 4-10 conference record during their inaugural season in the GNAC.
