Women's LAX Falls Short at Mass Maritime


BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. -- The Mitchell College women's lacrosse team played its first-ever road game at Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Sunday afternoon, losing by a final score of 26-10 in non-conference action at Clean Harbords Stadium.

Molly Smith netted seven goals and a pair of assists for a career-high nine points to lead the Buccaneers (2-4 overall), who built a seven-goal first half advantage before settling for a 14-9 edge at the break. Mass Maritime then notched 11 unanswered tallies in the opening 23-plus minutes after intermission to set a program record for goals in a match.  

Hillary Doucette added six goals and an assist for seven points on the day for the winners, who also received four markers and a pair of helpers from Ashley Solari. Janine Prokscha and Christina Murphy each netted a pair of goals and two assists for four points while Stephanie O'Connor and Dahlia Seggelin each added two tallies. 

Freshman Ashley Murtha netted six goals in the setback for the visiting Mariners (1-5 overall), who also received single tallies off the sticks of junior Alexandra Charles, sophomore Alexandra Mahar and freshmen Amanda Rowan and Jenna Rodriguez. The goals by Charles and Rodriguez were their first of the season; Murtha now leads the team with 23 goals.  

Jenna Breault picked up the win in goal for the Buccaneers with a five-save effort, while junior Anysia Lombardo made six stops in net for Mitchell. Mass Maritime outshot Mitchell by a 38-15 margin while holding a 23-13 advantage in draw controls for the contest.

The Mariners will next travel to Troy, N.Y. to take on Sage College in a non-league on Saturday, April 19 at 2 p.m.
