Women's LAX Picks Up Win at Albertus Magnus

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- The Mitchell College women's lacrosse team picked up its second victory of the 2014 on Monday afternoon at Albertus Magnus College, winning by a final score of 26-17 at Celentano Field.

Freshman Ashley Murtha scored a season-high 13 goals for Mitchell (2-7 overall) and added one assist, one of four Mariners who netted their hightest goal total of the season. Sophomore Alexandra Mahar chipped in with five goals, freshman Amanda Rowan tallied four and sophomore Veyda McVey contributed three.

Murtha, who also finished with a game-high 12 draw controls, has racked up 50 goals over nine games this season. The 13 goals ranks as the most in a single game in Division III women's lacrosse this season, topping her own total of 11 in the season opener against Bay Path College.

Halle Atieri scored seven goals to lead the Falcons (2-10 overall) while both Miranda Jassil and Ashley Guerrera added five goals apiece.

Mitchell took a 3-0 lead thanks to two goals from Murtha before Albertus cut the deficit to 3-2. Murtha scored Mitchell's next five goals to increase the lead to 8-3, and McVey, Rowan and Mahar then took turns finding the back of the cage to make it 11-6. Murtha added two more goals in the final 5:26 of the half to give the Mariners a 13-8 lead at the break. 

In the second half, Jassil got the Falcons to within four goals with a score of her own less than three minutes into the frame. Mitchell answered with threes traight goals to take a 16-8 lead before play went back and forth with scores on each side of the field.

Mitchell continued its impressive offensive outing, taking a 10-goal lead with 14:46 left in regulation thanks to a Rowan goal that made the score 23-13. Mahar scored four of her five goals in the second half while Murtha added four as well.

The Mariners held a 45-35 advantage in shots for the contest and went 5-for-9 in free position shots. Erika Blechert made 15 saves in goal for the Falcons, while junior Anysia Lombardo made nine stops for Mitchell.

Mitchell will next play at Becker College on Wednesday, April 23 at 7 p.m.
