Women's LAX Falls 12-11 in Final Minute

NEW LONDON, Conn. – A goal in the final minute was the difference as Bay Path University topped Mitchell College, 12-11, Monday afternoon in a New England Collegiate Conference women's lacrosse showdown at Alumni Field.

Nicole Mitchell netted her seventh goal of the afternoon with 42 seconds remaining in regulation to propel the Wildcats to their first victory of the season. Kaylee Herring added three goals for Bay Path (1-2 overall, 1-0 NECC) while Megan Tancredi contributed a pair.

Ashley Murtha and Tiana Fillmore each finished with four goals to pace the Mariners (0-6 overall, 0-2 NECC). Amanda Rowan added a pair of scores while Emily Winnett chipped in with her first career tally.

Nicole Mitchell scored four goals in the opening half—including the first two of the game—to stake Bay Path to a 7-5 lead at the break. Tancredi potted both of her goals in the first 30 minutes as well, and goalie Nicole Gousey made eight of her 11 saves to keep the Mariners in check.

Trailing 8-5 in the second half, the Mariners slowly chipped away at the deficit as Murtha and Fillmore led the offensive charge. Fillmore scored three goals in a five-minute span, the last of which tied the game at 11-11 with 9:23 to play.

Goalie Taylor Dansereau did her best to keep the Mariners close, making 11 of her 14 saves in the second half. However, after a near nine-minute stretch in which neither team could pull ahead, Nicole Mitchell finally broke through for the game-winning score with under a minute to play.

Mitchell will next host Wheelock College on Saturday, April 11 at 10 a.m. Bay Path returns to action at Elms College on Wednesday, April 8 at 7 p.m.
