Women's LAX Falls to Wheelock on Senior Day


NEW LONDON, Conn. – Wheelock College picked up its first victory of the season by a 15-4 final over Mitchell College on Saturday morning in New England Collegiate Conference women's lacrosse action at Alumni Field.

Molly Centore finished with a game-high six goals and one assist while Emma Marrs contributed five scores and three helpers to lead the Wildcats (1-5 overall, 1-1 NECC). Ashley Murtha paced the Mariners (0-7 overall, 0-3 NECC) with three goals. 

Marrs gave Wheelock the early lead with a pair of goals in the opening 5:05, but the Mariners tied the game behind two scores by Murtha that made it 2-2 with 22:29 to play in the half. Centore then took over for the Wildcats, scoring three goals over the final 19:28 to give her squad a 5-2 lead at the break.

After a goal by Mitchell's Tiana Fillmore cut the deficit to 5-3 in the opening moments of the second half, Wheelock bumped the margin to four behind free position shots from Centore and Courtney Sherer. Murtha completed the hat trick with 21:32 remaining in the contest, but it would end up being Mitchell's last goal. The Wildcats scored the final eight markers of the game that included three more from Marrs and two from Centore.

Meghan Lewis and Carina Lawrence split time in goal for Wheelock. Lewis made nine saves and picked up the win while Lawrence played the entire second half and finished with four stops. Mitchell goalie Taylor Dansereau recorded eight saves against 26 shots.

Mitchell will next host Southern Vermont College on Wednesday, April 15 at 4 p.m. Wheelock returns to action at home against Elms College on Sunday, April 12 at 2 p.m.
