Women's LAX Drops Season Opener at RIC

PROVIDENCE, R.I.— The Mitchell College women's lacrosse team dropped a 13-3 decision at Rhode Island College on Thursday afternoon to open the 2016 season.

RIC's Allison Smedberg notched four points with two goals and a pair of assists, and Tess Bradley chipped in with three goals and a helper. The game was ended with 6:05 left to play in the second half due to lightning. The Anchorwomen (2-1) won for the second consecutive game, marking the first time RIC has won back-to-back contests since the 2014 season.

RIC ripped off three goals in the first 8:18 of the game, paced by two from Alison Nolan. The Mariners (0-1) answered back as senior Katie McBride registered back-to-back strikes at 9:13 and 12:41.

That would be as close as the Mariners would get as the Anchorwomen scored seven straight to go into halftime up 10-2. Bradley and Nolan each completed the hat trick effort as part of the run.

The hosts scored three times in the first 12:39 of the second half to build a 13-2
advantage. Mitchell freshman Francesca Pinard scored with just under eight minutes left to cap the contest's offensive output.

Rhode Island College held the advantage in shots (24-16) but Mitchell led in
ground balls (28-23). Neither squad did a good job taking care of the ball, as the two
clubs combined for 55 turnovers.

Mitchell junior Amanda Rowan registered an assist, three caused turnovers and a game-high seven ground balls. Classmate Willeen Pun equaled Rowan's effort in ground balls.

RIC goalkeeper Julia Eaton made 10 saves in the win (2-1). Mitchell senior Samantha Ryan turned away eight offerings in the loss (0-1).

Mitchell returns to action at Albertus Magnus College on Thursday, March 24 at 7 p.m.
