WLAX Earns First Win at Albertus Magnus


NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's lacrosse team picked up its first win of the season on Thursday evening, defeating in-state foe Albertus Magnus College by a 20-10 final at Celentano Field in non-conference action.

It was a two-headed attack for Mitchell as juniors Amanda Rowan and Ashley Murtha combined for 14 goals and four assists. Rowan and Murtha each netted seven tallies and added two helpers in the contest. Murtha recorded her 100th career point in the contest and sits two tallies shy of 100 career goals.

Kate McCormack also contributed three goals while Francesca Pinard added two markers. Rowan registered a game-high nine draw controls and Pinard won four. First-year head coach Chelsea Phillips recorded her first career victory as Mitchell evened its record at 1-1 on the season.

Aida Sarr led the Falcons (0-3 overall) with four goals and added an assist. Miranda Jassil continued her strong play with two goals while Alex Chan added a marker and a helper. Defensively, freshman Taylor Bisaillon had a team-leading three caused turnovers and three other Falcons had two apiece. Kerrigan Loughman had a team-best four draw controls.

Between the pipes, AMC's Lexie Fenn turned aside 10 shots in a losing effort. On the opposite end, Samantha Ryan made 10 saves to earn her first win of the spring.

Albertus Magnus came out of the gates charging, as Sarr scored twice in the first 90 seconds of play to give the home team a 2-0 edge early. Mitchell answered quickly with Rowan putting the guests on the board with her first of the day with 28:17 left in the first half. After Rowan's tally, the visitors ran off 10 straight goals before Chan stopped the Mitchell run with a marker. AMC's Maria Case netted her first career goal with 8:30 left in the first frame to pull the Falcons within seven at 11-4.

Down the stretch in the opening half, Mitchell outscored Albertus 6-3 to take a 17-7 edge into the break.

The scoring slowed down in the second half with each squad potting three tallies apiece. Mitchell controlled possession throughout the final 30 minutes to record the triumph.

Mitchell forced 25 Albertus Magnus turnovers and outshot the hosts (37-24). The Mariners were 6-of-9 on free-position shots, while the Falcons converted on 1-of-3 free-position attempts.

Mitchell returns to action at MCLA on Saturday, March 26 at 1 p.m.
