Women's LAX Powers to 21-2 Win at Bay Path


LONGMEADOW, Mass. - The Mitchell College women's lacrosse team opened New England Collegiate Conference play with a 21-2 victory at Bay Path University on Wednesday afternoon at Ryan Field.

Mitchell (2-2, 1-0 NECC) led 2-1 in the early going before ripping off 14 unanswered goals to close the half. The Mariners then scored the first four goals of the second stanza to seal the win. Five players finished with at least a hat trick on the day, led by six goals from Ashley Murtha.

Katie McBride scored all three of her goals in the opening 18 minutes of the contest to help set the tone. Murtha also scored twice during the span, recording her 100th career goal in the process.

Mitchell poured it on in the final 17:19 of the half, as Murtha netted three more goals and Heather Schall, Kate McCormack and Amanda Rowan each added a pair. The Mariners led 16-1 at the break.

McCormack tacked on three goals in the second half to finish with five in the contest. Schall and Rowan each finished with hat tricks while Francesca Pinard added a tally.

Goalie Samantha Ryan made four saves against six shots to record her second victory of the season. The Mariners held a commanding 28-9 edge in shots in the contest.

Mitchell will next host Elms College on Saturday, April 2 at 3:30 p.m.
