WLAX Comes Up Short at Newbury

MEDFORD, Mass. - Newbury College's Venezia Delgadillo, Sophia Kiasi and Hannah Gorham combined for all 16 goals in a 16-12 comeback win over the Mitchell College on Wednesday afternoon in New England Collegiate Conference play.

Delgadillo scored a career-high seven goals, giving her 32 on the season and the second-most in the NECC. Kiasi added a career-high six goals on the afternoon, giving her 15 goals in the last five games. Gorham finished with a hat trick, her second consecutive game with three goals.

Rachel Barda netted a career-high four goals and added one assist to lead Mitchell. Kate McCormack scored a pair and added two assists. McCormack now has 28 goals on the season, ranking fifth in the conference.

The opening 16 minutes was all Mitchell, as the visitors grabbed a 6-1 lead that included McCormack's two goals and a pair from Lindsey Fairbank.

With the Nighthawks trailing 7-2 with 11:18 remaining, Kiasi scored two consecutive to cut the deficit to 7-4. Barda responded to make it 8-4, but the Nighthawks scored four goals in the final five minutes of the half, including a hat trick from Delgadillo to tie the game at 8-8.

In the opening 14 minutes of the second, the teams traded a pair of goals to remain tied at 11-11. From that point the Nighthawks seized the momentum, starting with a pair of Gorham goals in under a minute for a 13-11 lead.

Later in the half, Kiasi scored a pair of goals in 20 seconds, giving the Nighthawks a 15-11 lead with 6:21 to go. Kiasi added another goal in the final moments to give Newbury a five-goal cushion.

Hannah Corrigan got Mitchell within four at 16-12 with 3:42 remaining, but the Nighthawks were able to drain the final minutes off the clock in the 16-12 win.

Newbury's Keely Molloy made 20 saves in the win, improving to 2-7 on the season. Mitchell's Gillian MacLellan took the loss, falling to 2-7 in her 13-save effort.

The win moves the Nighthawks to 2-7 (2-2 NECC) while the loss drops the Mariners to 2-7 (1-3 NECC).

Mitchell (2-7 overall, 1-3 NECC) will next host Bay Path University on Saturday, April 21 at 11 a.m.
