WLAX Fights Back but Comes Up Short at SVC

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – The Mitchell College women's lacrosse team wrapped up the regular season on Sunday with a 14-11 New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) loss to Southern Vermont College at Shewcraft Field.

After leading 10-2 at halftime, SVC saw the Mariners come back and make it a two-score game late in the contest. The Mountaineers got the final tally of the afternoon, however, and kept MC off the board the rest of the way to secure the victory.

SVC (3-9, 3-3 NECC)—which earned the No. 4 seed in the upcoming NECC Championship with Sunday's win—will host fifth-seeded Bay Path University at 4 p.m. on Tuesday for a first-round matchup. Mitchell (2-9, 1-5 NECC) will head to Elms College Tuesday night as the six seed and take on the Blazers in a 7 p.m. postseason showdown.

SVC's Alex Safford scored five goals while adding a team-best five draw controls and two caused turnovers. Brittany Fulton chalked up three goals, three assists and three ground balls, and Marisa Moy tallied two goals, an assist and four ground balls in the win.

Sydnee Julian made eight saves in net for SVC, and she also grabbed a team-high seven ground balls while collecting her seventh career victory (3-9). Her Mitchell counterpart, Gillian MacLellan, made 11 stops in addition to snagging six ground balls in the loss (2-9).

Mitchell's Kate McCormack led all players with six goals, and she also tallied game-highs of eight ground balls, seven draw controls and five caused turnovers. Francesca Pinard registered two goals, two assists, six ground balls and three caused turnovers while Hannah Corrigan chipped in a goal, an assist, five ground balls, three draw controls and two caused turnovers.

After Vanessa Kendall got Southern Vermont on the board just 2:06 into the match, Pinard took a Corrigan pass and tied it up less than two minutes later. The Mountaineers controlled the rest of the half, however, as they went on to clip MC 9-1 through the remainder of the period. Safford had four goals in the frame with Fulton assisting three of those.

Mitchell netted the first three goals of the second half, only to see the hosts get the next two. The Mariners went on to score four unanswered tallies, however, with McCormack getting the last pair of the spurt. McCormack then recorded another set of back-to-back tallies to make it a 13-11 contest with 3:03 to go, but Safford gave her team an extra insurance score 47 seconds later while SVC kept the Mariners from beating Julian in the final few minutes.
