WLAX Drops Season Opener at Anna Maria

PAXTON, Mass. -- The Mitchell College women's lacrosse team opened the 2020 season with a 19-8 loss to Anna Maria College on Saturday afternoon at Caparso Field.

Hannah Corrigan led the Mariners with four goals and an assist while Daniella Holland added a hat trick. Lindsey Fairbank accounted for the final goal, and she and Corrigan each recorded seven draw controls to lead all players. 

Bryce McDonald paced Anna Maria (2-1 overall) with seven goals and a helper while Ashley Rufo (four goals, one assist) and Alyssa Vacca (three goals) also helped carry the offensive workload.

Mitchell got off to a good start as Holland and Fairbank provided back-to-back scores in the first five minutes of the contest for a 2-0 advantage. After Holland's second tally yielded a 3-1 lead for the Mariners, Anna Maria fired back with three straight goals to take its first lead of the day. Corrigan then notched her first goal with 17:47 left in the half to tie the score at 4-4.

The AMCATS dominated the rest of the half, producing six unanswered goals en route to a 10-4 lead at the break. McDonald netted two of the goals and finished with four in the stanza.

Corrigan opened the second-half scoring with a goal off the draw, but Anna Maria scored the next eight to take its largest lead at 18-5. Mitchell produced three more scores in the final 10 minutes of the game, two of which came from Corrigan. 

Gillian MacLellan faced 35 total shots and finished with 13 saves in her season debut. 

Mitchell will next play at Eastern Connecticut State University on Wednesday, March 11 at 3 p.m.
