WLAX Comes Up Short vs. Castleton

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's lacrosse team suffered a 16-9 setback against Castleton University on a rainy Thursday afternoon in non-conference action.

Kimberly McCarthy finished with a game-high six goals and an assist to pace the Spartans, who opened the 2021 season with a victory. Lacey Greenamyre added four goals and two helpers to go along with a game-high 10 ground balls. Aubra Linn and Cheyanne Stone each contributed two goals and an assist.

Hannah Corrigan paced Mitchell with five goals while Daniella Holland added two. Lindsey Fairbank and Kathryn Barillaro also chipped in goals for the Mariners, who dropped to 0-3 on the season.

Castleton jumped out to an early 2-0 lead behind scores from Greenamyre and Stone in the opening 7:12. Corrigan kept the Mariners in the game, responding with two goals just over four minutes apart to knot the score at 2-2 with 18:10 to play in the half.

Goals by McCarthy and Maddie Brasser gave the Spartans another two-goal cushion until Barillaro netted her first collegiate goal to cut the deficit to 4-3 with 4:52 to go. However, Castleton rallied for three goals in the final 3:40 of the stanza and took a 7-3 lead into intermission.

Mitchell kept within striking distance for a good portion of the second half. After falling behind 9-4, the Mariners scored a pair of free position goals in less than a minute to draw within three. Minutes later, a goal by Corrigan made it a 10-7 game with 14:59 remaining.

On the ensuing draw, Linn grabbed control and marched in for an uncontested goal. The play sparked a two-minute stretch where the Spartans expanded the lead to 13-7 as McCarthy and Stone also added tallies. After Corrigan netted her final marker with 7:59 to play, Castleton added three straight goals to take its largest lead of the day at 16-8.

Raven Payne played the majority of the contest in goal for Castleton and made four saves against 10 shots. Mitchell goalie Hannah Gomes, making her collegiate debut in the cage, stopped nine shots.

Mitchell will next play at Gordon College on Saturday, March 20 at 1 p.m. Castleton returns to action at St. Lawrence University on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
