WLAX Falls Short in Second Half vs. RIC

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's lacrosse team lost by a 17-7 final on Monday afternoon in a non-conference showdown against Rhode Island College.

Emily Marino led all scorers with seven goals as the Anchorwomen opened the 2021 season with a victory. Olivia Carpenito added five goals, seven ground balls and eight draw controls while Alyssa Silvestre contributed three goals and two ground balls. Goalie Shannon O'Connell made four saves against 11 shots to earn the win.

Hannah Corrigan paced Mitchell with three goals while Kathryn Barillaro finished with two. Lindsey Fairbank chipped in a goal and an assist to go along with eight draw controls and three ground balls. Ashley Holdridge made her collegiate debut in the cage and recorded eight saves against 25 shots.

Mitchell pulled out to a 2-0 lead early as Corrigan potted a pair of goals in the opening 1:06 of the contest. The Anchorwomen quickly tied the game behind scores from Carpenito and Silvestre that came 32 seconds apart.

After another goal by Corrigan put Mitchell on top 3-2, RIC responded with four straight tallies to take control for good. Marino scored twice during the stretch as the Anchorwomen opened up a 6-3 lead. 

Later in the half, Marino scored back-to-back goals to make it a 9-5 game. Fairbank then scored on a free position attempt to keep Mitchell close, but the Anchorwomen closed the half strong to lead 11-6 at the break. 

Mitchell suffered a setback right before the end of the half as Corrigan picked up her second yellow card of the game. Her presence was missed in the second half as the Mariners were forced to play without their leading scorer.

Marino tacked on three more goals in the second stanza as RIC's lead grew to double digits. The Anchorwomen finished the game with a 34-21 edge in total shots.

Mitchell (0-5 overall) will next host the University of Saint Joseph on Saturday, March 27 at 11 a.m. RIC (1-0 overall) opens conference play at home against Plymouth State University on Saturday at 1 p.m.
