WLAX Falls to Elms on Senior Day

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's lacrosse team dropped an 18-8 decision to Elms College on Saturday afternoon in a New England Collegiate Conference showdown.

The Blazers used a balanced scoring attack to improve to 3-1 (3-1 NECC) on the season. Taylor Borla, Arianna Callahan, Anna-Elise Pikul and Elise Paier netted four goals apiece to lead the way while Bryce McDonald also tallied a pair.

Lindsey Fairbank and Hannah Corrigan celebrated senior day with multiple goals. Fairbank paced the Mariners with three tallies and an assist while Corrigan had two goals and an assist to go with five ground balls. Hannah Gomes and Rachel Ricciuti also potted their first collegiate goals in the contest.

Elms scored the first five goals of the game and never trailed at any point. Callahan accounted for a pair of scores in the first 10 minutes as the Blazers opened the game strong.

Gomes put Mitchell on the scoreboard with a nifty goal at the 16:29 mark. She started her run from behind the cage, and once she got to the top of the crease she buried a back-handed flick past the Elms keeper.

Fairbank supplied Mitchell's next three goals of the half. She completed the hat trick on a free position shot with 8:47 to go in the period to close the gap to 8-4.

Elms led 10-5 at intermission with the help of four goals from Callahan. Borla and Pikul each chipped in two goals in the stanza.

The Blazers scored eight of the first nine goals in the second half to open up a double-digit lead. Paier potted three in the final period while Borland and Pikul each added a pair.

Ricciuti scored twice in the final 6:28 of the game. Her first goal came off an assist from Corrigan, and in the closing seconds she tacked on the second on a free position attempt.

Elms goalie Gianna Liquori made 11 saves to pick up her first win of the season. Ashley Holdridge made a season-high 12 stops in the cage for Mitchell.

The Mariners recognized five seniors prior to the game in a special ceremony. Fairbank, Corrigan, Holdridge, Lexi Incropera and team manager Emma Quinn were all celebrated for their contributions to the program.

Mitchell (0-7 overall, 0-3 NECC) will next host Becker College on Tuesday, April 20 at 4 p.m. Elms returns to action at Becker on Sunday, April 25 at noon.
