WLAX Hangs Tough at Purchase

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Mitchell College women's lacrosse team suffered a 12-7 setback at Purchase College on Wednesday afternoon.

Abby Rasmussen and Jessica Krupnikoff paced the Mitchell offense with two goals apiece. Rachel Ricciuti also tacked on a goal and an assist, and Kathryn Barillaro and Daniella Holland added a goal apiece.

Hannah Gomes made her first start of the season in goal and finished with four saves against 16 shots.

Holland provided the only goal of the opening quarter to stake Mitchell to a 1-0 advantage. Purchase countered by scoring six of the first seven goals in the second period to take control, with Madison Buttice supplying three tallies during the stretch.

Krupnikoff potted her first goal with 3:44 remaining in the half, but the Panthers scored twice in the final 3:00 to take an 8-3 lead into intermission. Purchase then opened the second half with a pair of scores to take its largest lead of the game at 10-3.

Back-to-back goals from Rasmussen and Ricciuti helped cut into the deficit, but the Mariners still trailed 11-5 heading into the fourth quarter. Krupnikoff and Rasmussen each netted their second goal of the game in the final period, but it wasn't enough to make up the difference.

Buttice led all scorers with six goals for the Panthers. Both teams finished with 16 shots on goal, but Purchase goalie Casandra Schmoger came up with eight saves.

Mitchell will next play at Castleton University on Saturday, March 26 at 3 p.m.
