Women's LAX Stumbles Against Maritime

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The SUNY Maritime College women's lacrosse team handed Mitchell College a 22-2 loss on Tuesday afternoon.

The Privateers, who improved to 7-0 overall, led 12-2 after the opening quarter and never trailed at any point. Gabrielle Nicolosi set the pace with game highs of seven goals and six assists, one of seven Maritime goal scorers in the contest. Jenna Lesiewicz added four goals and three assists while Avery Jillison Neuwirth and Sara Wright each recorded a hat trick.

Mitchell's offense came from Jessica Krupnikoff and Daniella Holland, who each contributed a goal. Hannah Gomes played all 60 minutes in the cage and finished with eight saves.

Lesiewicz potted the game's first goal less than two minutes in, and 18 seconds later she fed Tori Gay for a score that gave the visitors a quick 2-0 advantage. Mitchell fired back with a tally by Krupnikoff, but the Privateers responded with a flurry of goals over the next five minutes. Wright and Nicolosi each scored twice as Maritime stretched the lead to 8-1 with 7:06 remaining in the period.

Holland's goal came with 6:32 left in the quarter, but it would be Mitchell's final marker of the day. Lesiewicz, Nicolosi and Wright all added goals before the end of the stanza as Maritime took a double-digit lead into the second period.

Nicolosi added three goals in the second quarter as the lead mushroomed to 17-2 by intermission. In the second half, the Privateers slowed the pace and worked the shot clock to protect the lead. Nicolosi tacked on her seventh goal late in the third, and in the fourth she assisted on the Privateers' final goal by Giavonna DiToma.

Liz Pomaro and Tori Koenig split time in goal for the Privateers, although neither recorded a save. Maritime held a 37-4 advantage in total shots and owned a 25-10 edge in ground balls. Kathryn Sanford scooped up a game-high six ground balls while Gay added five.

Mitchell (1-6 overall) will next play at Lasell College on Thursday, March 31 at 4 p.m.
