Big First Half Leads Albertus Magnus Past Women's LAX

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's lacrosse team suffered a 20-9 setback against Albertus Magnus College on Thursday afternoon in a non-conference clash.

The Falcons (2-11 overall) outscored the Mariners 14-4 in the first half and never let the margin dip below double digits in the second. Alexandra Barrett and Katherine Raposo scored five goals apiece to lead the attack, with the former also supplying a game-high five assists. Keegan Riccio also added four goals while Amanda McGeehan recorded a hat trick.

Daniella Holland tallied a season-high four goals to pace the Mariners (1-11 overall). Kathryn Barillaro contributed three goals while Abby Rasmussen and Jessica Krupnikoff each chipped in a score.

The Falcons jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead thanks to goals by Barrett, McGeehan and Riccio in the opening 4:02 of the contest. Barrett added two more scores by the end of the quarter as the visitors built an 8-1 lead.

Holland and Barillaro scored back-to-back goals to start the second period, whittling the deficit back to five. However, Albertus Magnus responded with six of the next seven goals to expand the lead to 14-4 by intermission. Raposa supplied three scores in the quarter, including the final two before the halftime whistle.

The Falcons led by as many as 13 in the second half. Mitchell's offense finally kicked into gear midway through the third quarter as Holland scored twice and Barillaro added a goal in a four-minute stretch. Rasmussen's goal in the final minute of the period made it a 19-8 game heading into the fourth.

AMC goalie Chloe Oliver finished with three saves against 12 shots on goal. Hannah Gomes also made three stops for the Mariners against 23 shots on goal.

Prior to the game, the Mariners honored seniors Stephanie Costabile and Lindsey Robinson in a special ceremony. Costabile caused a pair of turnovers in the contest while Robinson grabbed six ground balls and caused three turnovers.

Mitchell will next play at New England College on Sunday, April 24 at 6:00 p.m.
