WLAX Drops Season Opener Against USJ

NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Mitchell College women's lacrosse team opened the 2023 season with a 20-2 loss at home to the University of Saint Joseph on Wednesday afternoon.

Makenzie Dinger scored five goals to lead the Blue Jays, who also got four goals apiece from the duo of Cayleen Defaranos and Lauryn Wilks. Maya Tomko chipped in three goals for USJ, while Karina Jassil added a pair. Mitchell's two goals in the contest came courtesy of freshman Lauren Cordero (Selden, N.Y.) and junior Jessica Krupnikoff (Farmington, Conn.). It was the first colliegate goal for Cordero, who scored on a free position shot in the final minute of the opening frame.

The Blue Jays got out to an 8-1 lead after the first quarter and held a 14-1 advantage at the break. By the time halftime rolled around, Wilks had netted four goals already and Dinger had a hat trick.

In the second half, the Blue Jays expanded the lead to 19-1 before Krupnikoff scored her 15th career tally with 10:30 remaining in the contest.

Mitchell goal Hannah Gomes (Groton, Conn.) made 13 saves against 33 shots in her season debut after notching 10 starts in net last spring. Krupnikoff scooped up a team-high four ground balls and added a pair of caused turnovers. Cordero also added two caused turnovers for Mitchell.

The Mariners (0-1 overall) will play next on Saturday, March 11th, when they host Northern Vermont-Lyndon at 2:30 pm. The Blue Jays (2-0 overall) travel to Simmons University for their next game on Saturday, March 11.
