WLAX Comes Up Short at RIC

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Mitchell College women's lacrosse team traveled to Providence on Friday afternoon and came out on the wrong side of an 18-5 decision against Rhode Island College in non-conference action at Alumni Stadium.

Claire Greene paced the Anchorwomen with four goals, while Hannah Marley and Chloe Angelone each notched hat tricks in the win. Ashley Rewers and Sydnee Pires also had two goals apiece for RIC, who won for the first time this spring.

Abby Rasmussen (Monvtille, Conn.) scored her first two goals of the season for the Mariners and Daniella Holland (Nanuet, N.Y.) scored two goals as well, giving her a team-best 12 on the season. Jessica Krupnikoff (Farmington, Conn.) added her eighth goal of the year to round out the scoring for Mitchell, who were outscored 9-1 in the second half.

RIC got off to a fast start, scoring three consecutive goals in the first three minutes of action before Rasmussen found the back of the net on an assist by Krupnikoff at the 10:43 mark in the opening quarter. Less than a minute later, Rasmussen set up Holland for her first goal of the afternoon to make it a 3-2 game. Hannah Marley scored her first goal of the game moments later, and the score would remain 4-2 heading into the second quarter.

The Anchorwomen opened the second frame by scoring four unanswered goals in the opening five minutes to build a 7-2 advantage. Rasmussen stopped the bleeding with her second score of the game at the 4:34 mark, yet Claire Greene answered right back before Holland tacked on her second score with one minute and two seconds left until intermission.

The Mariners would manage just one more goal the rest of the way and were outshot 41-14 in the game. Mitchell turned the ball over 32 times to just 21 for the home squad, and RIC scooped up 26 ground balls compared to 17 for the Mariners.

Olivia Brennan played all 60 minutes in cage for the Anchorwomen and made six saves.

Hannah Gomes (Groton, Conn.) also played all 60 minutes in goal for the Mariners and made 16 saves, vaulting her into second place on the program's all-time list behind only Gillian MacLellan.

The Mariners (1-4 overall) will return home after a two game road trip on Tuesday, March 28, when they host Purchase College at 4:00 pm.
