WLAX Delivers Big Senior Day Win Over Wells

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's lacrosse team battled heavy rain and wind on Saturday afternoon to deliver a convincing victory on senior day, breezing past Wells College 15-6 in a non-conference showdown. The victory is the third of the season for the Mariners, marking the first time since 2018 that the team has won more than two games and the first time since April of the same year that the team has strung together consecutive victories.

Senior Daniella Holland (Nanuet, N.Y.) paced the home team with six goals, giving her a team best 22 through seven games this spring. Abby Rasmussen (Montville, Conn) and Rachel Ricciuti (East Northport, N.Y.) tallied two goals each, while Jessica Krupnikoff (Farmington, Conn.), Aizhane Glenn (West Haven, Conn.), Mariah Travisano (Putnam, Conn.), Lauren Cordero (Selden, N.Y.), and Bree Rudolph (Glendale, Ariz.) each found the back of the net in the win for the Mariners.

Krupnikoff also scooped up a game-high 10 ground balls, giving her 124 for her career, which moves her past Kate McCormack and into sole possession of first place in program history.

After Lydia Thomas scored the opening goal of the game for Wells just under two minutes into the action, the Mariners responded with five unanswered goals, three by Holland, to build a 5-1 advantage at the end of the first quarter. Wells battled back, outscoring Mitchell 2-1 in the second frame on goals by Thomas and Grace Kahl to make the score 6-3 heading into halftime.

The Mariners silenced Wells 3-0 in the third stanza to pull further ahead, as Holland notched two goals and Krupnikoff added one. Cordero opened the fourth quarter with another goal for Mitchell, however back to back goals by Wells trimmed Mitchell's lead to 10-5 with just under 13 minutes remaining.

The Mariners would outscore Wells 5-1 over the remaining 12:58, with goals coming from Glenn, Ricciuti, Rudolph, and Travisano. Hannah Gomes (Groton, Conn.) played all 60 minutes in the cage and had a big day, recording 10 saves and five ground balls.

Mitchell outshot Wells 31-23, won the ground ball battle 46-29, and forced 26 turnovers from the visiting squad. The Mariners also controlled the game in the center of the field, winning the draw control battle 22-6 while going 12-19 on clear attempts.

Lydia Thomas had a hat trick to lead Wells, who were playing just their second game of the season. Lauren Spiegel played all 60 minutes in the net and made 10 saves against 25 shots on goal.

The Mariners (3-4 overall) will look for their fourth win of the season when they return to action on Friday, April 7, in a road game at Curry College.
