WLAX Stumbles at Albertus

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's lacrosse team fell short in a non-conference road game on Monday afternoon, losing to Albertus Magnus College 18-8 at Celentano Field.

Amanda McGeehan led the Falcons with five goals, while Kaitlin D'Agostino, Alexandra Barrett, and Keegan Riccio tallied four goals apiece in the win. The 18 goals was a season-high for Albertus, who earned their first victory of the season.

Daniella Holland (Nanuet, N.Y.) led the Mariners with five goals, giving the senior 30 goals and 35 points this spring with two games remaining. Junior Jessica Krupnikoff (Farmington, Conn.) added two goals, and senior Rachel Ricciuti (East Northport, N.Y.) scored once for Mitchell, who finished with 25 total shots, 15 of those on goal.

McGeehan opened the scoring for the Faclons at the 7:01 mark before Krupnikoff answered off a free position shot less than two minutes later. Keegan Riccio scored next, late in the first quarter, to give Albertus a slim 2-1 edge after 15 minutes of play.

Krupnikoff's 12th goal of the season came 45 seconds into the second frame, but the Falcons responded with four unanswered goals to jump ahead 6-2. Holland scored with 6:30 remaining until the half to make it 6-3, but Amanda McGeehan found the back of the net less than 30 seconds later for Albertus. Ricciuti scored unassisted just over a minute later, but again the Falcons answered, as Alexandra Barrett netted a free position shot in the waning minutes of the half, sending the Falcons into the intermission ahead 8-4.

Daniella Holland kept the Mariners close early in the second half, scoring twice in the third quarter against three Falcon goals in the stanza. Despite two more goals by the senior in the fourth quarter, Albertus was able to pull away by outscoring Mitchell 7-2 across the final 15 minutes.

The Mariners managed 25 total shots, lost the ground ball battle 22-17, and committed 21 turnovers. Mitchell won 11 draw controls, five of them by freshman Lauren Cordero (Selden, N.Y.), and finished 14-18 on clear attempts.

The Mariners (3-7 overall, 0-1 NECC) return to action on Tuesday, April 25, when they host Dean College in a non-conference match.
